New Creek Ranch, California - August 4, 2000. Managed storage will grow to approximately $4-bil by 2003 - starting from near zero today. Several factors will be responsible for 100% growth. The most important will be the increase in the volume of stored data, fueled not only by more text data - often doubling each year - but by more capacity-demanding data such as streaming media and audio. As information technology managers become overwhelmed with data, they face challenges of recruiting professionals to manage it, as well as anticipating equipment upgrades to meet the demand. Managed storage companies like GlobalCenter Inc. hope the increased costs of designing and implementing complex storage infrastructures will drive customers their way.
Any forecast has a dose of speculation. This is especially true for the managed storage business where there is only a very short track record. The following forecast revenues are based on, among other things, the availability of fast-storage technologies, the prevalence of backbone plug-ins among enterprise companies, and the growth in volume of data to be stored.
