New Creek Ranch, California - June 14, 2000. By 2003 InfoTech Trends anticipates the worldwide Internet commerce market will exceed $1.2 trillion. A number of factors will spur this unprecedented growth. The percent of online users purchasing goods and services will swell from approximately 30% in 2000 to 40% in 2003. Consumer confidence will continue to increase as Web transactions become more secure and online purchases become a more common way of buying goods. There will continue to be a greater availability and variety of these goods. Finally, markets will expand overseas as the pace for international sales quickens.
InfoTech Trends sees three major components to the Internet commerce market. The highest market share of the Web transactions will continue to be advertising based purchases, estimated at approximately $950-bil in 2003. Internet based subscription services (e.g., information retrieval, online storage, news services, health care...) will pull a strong second at $230-bil. Even in 2003 growth rates will exceed 100% per year for these components as they will for business-to-business transactions as well.
