New Creek Ranch, California - July 14, 2000. The information appliance market will expand rapidly as the Internet becomes a greater part of everyday life. Information appliances will help to access the Internet from any place and at any time and soon the PC will not be the only device for getting online. Indeed, in five years it may not be the enabler of choice. Information appliances will serve both business and consumer markets and worldwide sales will likely reach $23-bil in 2005.

Many information appliances will be adapted from appliances already in use. Internet TVs will benefit from familiarity with traditional TVs and lead sales in 2005 at 100 million units. Gaming devices, because of their low cost, will sell well. Screen phones will be used as telephones are today but will have the added feature of Internet access. Handheld devices will take advantage of their small size, portability, and organizing capabilities. Internet terminals (Web terminals and e-mail terminals) will address focused demands for e-mailing and browsing. InfoTech Trends sees total appliance shipments of 310 million units in 2005.
