New Creek Ranch, California - July 28, 2000. In 1999 content delivery service providers (CDSP) loomed out of the virtual nowhere to provide faster delivery of text and graphic data. The reason: with Internet traffic increasing at a sustained rate of 250% per year, delays are becoming more a fact of life than a nuisance. Content delivery service providers have so far offered two basic solutions for speeding up delivery. First, CDSPs use proprietary algorithms to condense and efficiently package data. Second, the content is served from a nearby server - the edge of the Internet - or even a home network , thus decreasing the length of the Internet to be traversed. Content delivery service providers are in their infancy and we can look for improvements like streaming media capabilities and load balancing to become popular over the next year.

In 1999 revenues for CDSPs were a mere $10 to $30-mil. By 2001 revenues will have increased to $300-mil and reach as high as $1-bil for 2003. That's an annul rate of 83%. Major players include Akami Technologies, Digital Island, and Speedero Networks. Expect more to join the play soon.

Forecast revenues for content delivery service providers (CDSPs).
